New Images of Humans exhibition in Wave Pool’s main gallery demonstrates the radical ways in which contemporary artists are currently engaging with the figure. Curated by Wave Pool's Exhibition Coordinator, Maria Seda-Reeder, NIOH is a fresh take on the infamous 1959 "New Images of Man" exhibition at the MoMA, this show features work by artists who seek to defy the largely white, heteronormative, Modernist, male-dominated narrative.
German-American existentialist philosopher Paul Tillich wrote in the introduction for the landmark figurative exhibition, New Images of Man, "Whenever a new period is conceived in the womb of the preceding period, a new image of man pushes towards the surface and finally breaks through to find its artists and philosophers."
What would a New Image for Humans show look like, if black, women and non-binary gendered artists were included in the story?
Given the ongoing injustices witnessed upon black, trans, and feminine-presenting bodies in the streets, our healthcare system, and the prison industrial complex—just to name a few manifestations of patriarchal white supremacy—how are artists engaging with the figure (conceptually, materially, and formally,) as a way to center new narratives at this crucial moment in history?
New Images of HUMANS is the beginning of a response to that question. Because we are living through a time of reexamining of what agency in representation can look like, this show is only a starting point for a much larger conversation around why and how the figure remains a relevant form for exploration in contemporary art practice.
Participating artists include Sea Dax, Nikita Gross and Prince Lange.
Across the street at The Welcome Project we will be exhibiting pieces created during our community ceramics classes. Attendees are welcome to attend both exhibitions on March 13th during their reserved time.
