NYC-based artist Nolan Hanson began their residency remotely last year due to travel restrictions and out of caution during the pandemic. Hanson held virtual boxing classes, a writing workshop, and other events in Fall 2020 as they researched Cincinnati’s boxing history and explored the local trans community. When they arrive to Cincinnati in late April 2021, they will research boxing history by visiting gyms and interacting with local residents.
Their resulting exhibition, titled An Effort to Defend, will use the context of the gallery to share their research with the public. Nolan will also use the space to provide boxing training for trans and gender variant members of the community.
Nolan Hanson is an artist based in New York City. Their practice includes independent work as well as collaborative socially engaged projects, and has been shown in New York, Chicago, Portland, and San Francisco. Nolan is the founder of Trans Boxing, an art project in the form of a boxing club that centers trans and gender variant people. They are an MFA candidate in the Art and Social Practice program at Portland State University.
The exhibition will be up in Wave Pool’s main gallery from May 5th – May 29th.
Gallery will have limited attendance to ensure social distancing. No reservations required but if it is too crowded we will ask that you wait outside until others leave to make space. Masks required.
