Come learn basic ceramic skills including basic slab building, coil building surface design techniques and much more. Featuring a revolving crew of local ceramics artists to teach us all the skills we need to create things for our home, our friends, and to sell.
Though everyone is welcome to attend the classes, we encourage refugees and immigrants specifically to come to the classes, especially those that might be interested in becoming involved at Welcome as artists, teachers, and employees.
M'Shinda Abdullah-Broaddus is the featured artist to lead the May-June classes. MShinda's work is centered around identity politics. He will give the attendees involved an outlet to explore their individual identities. The classes will begin with an exercise where they write a few words describing themselves, and their experiences as refugees, immigrants and members of the community. Followed by a collaboration to transform those words into visual elements on paper, later to be translated into clay objects and pieces that occupy space. This would give each participant the chance to learn the skills they were most interested in on an individual basis as well as a chance to explore their identity in a tangible way.
