Radio WAVE Radio Class

WYSO (Yellow Springs Ohio’s NPR station) Community Voices Producer Susan Byrnes spent Winter 2023 working with a group of local students learning how to put together an audio story, which then was broadcast to the neighborhood on a lo-fi radio transmitter.

Over the course of 8 class meetings, Susan shared some radio stories that focused on local storytelling to help generate ideas and class participants practiced interviewing, collecting sounds, and developing a story structure with writing and narration, to then produce their own story.

At the culmination of the program, the class hosted a live broadcast night where the stories were aired for the community.

The class was specifically geared towards those ages 55+ and was funded from the Ohio Arts Council through Creative Aging Ohio.
